A tsunami isn't a weather event, it is a geologic event. A weather event, such as a hurricane or strong gale could create tsunami waves by constant winds pushing the ocean inland, though. Usually underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis. These earthquakes abruptly disform plate boundries of the earth, which vertically displaces the overlying water. This makes waves which move across the water like ripples on a pond. These huge "ripples" move on shore, and keep coming in. They aren't like typical waves which will crash, and dissapate once reaching shore.

Most of the time the sea will recede from the coast half of the wave's period before the tsunami hits. If the slope is shallow, this recession can exceed many hundreds of meters.

Usually you feel an earth tremor-that is your clue to get to high ground if you are near water. Next you see the tide go way out-futher then normal- and it is generally possible to see the horizon become higher, water wise, if a tsunami is building. The time element here varies so get to higher ground no matter what.
Don't go near the water at all, even if you see others doing it.
Better to be safe then dead.
Not all quakes produce tsunamis but angain better to be safe then sorry.
No! Never seen one in real life -just studied them in college

I fairly have purely issued the denial warning to a lot of our government officers over email and to nearby T.V.Stations. they have omitted my request and our police very own have been vacating the folk residing close to the sea shore. yet i'm the only issued the warning on twenty 6th December 2004 properly earlier Tsunami assault our coast .My warning replaced into omitted. I fairly have issued the warning on twenty 6th Dec 2004 because of the fact I sensed the earthquake wave for an unusual time of 12 minutes by employing my earthquake alarm and that day replaced into finished moon day.The denial checklist replaced into issued on twenty eighth March 2005 because of the ( rework ) lateral pass of tectonic plate the tension replaced into launched in land. That has broken a vehicle coach room in Indonesia. My close remark helped me to project the warning and denial on numerous events.
