Samardzija chose the MLB over NFL for many reasons. In my opinion they are:
1. His heart was into baseball and not football. Although we aren't in this specific situation, it is hard to work hard towards something that you just hate.
2. He wasn't even the best WR in this draft, and football is more based on opportunity than skill. Say he was drafted by the Browns, odds are he's never going to be an elite WR because basically no1 on that team will be. However, baseball can be based strictly on your skill alone, specifically pitching.
3. Baseball contracts are guarenteed money, and you play so much longer.. so whenever he does become non arbitration eligible (if he is good enough) he is probably going to make more money from baseball to football. Whoever said that football players make more better check how many of these players actually get their whole contract, than look at Manny, AROD, Soriano, contract.
4. Football is much more work for much less money.

Being a pitcher requires less of an offseason dedication than saying being a top receiver in the NFL(no offense to baseball but just take a look at top NFL receivers and then take a look at what top pitchers do for offseason conditioning)
Fame wise, the long standing belief is without wearing a helmet all the time baseball players are more recognizable in the public unless you're a QB
And the big one is money wise. He has already cashed in with a nice guarenteed contract in baseball that he would not have gotten in the NFL. With no salary cap in baseball, football players will never make as much money

Because he wanted to play baseball more than football. He was the best pitcher on Notre Dame's baseball team. And yes he would have probably made more money in the NFL, but it is about the love for the game no matter if it is football, baseball, soccer or what (I left basketball out because NBA players really just want a paycheck, if all the players in the NBA only played because they loved the game and didn't care how much money they made the only players in the league would be the Europeans). He made his choice and right now he is playing baseball and earning a paycheck while Brady Quinn is worrying about getting drafted by the Lions or Browns.

Basically it all came down to that his passion fell with baseball instead of football. Yahoo Sports ran a column about it not too long ago and Samardzija commented that he talked with family about it and with his coaches about it. And what it all came down to it he just wanted to play baseball more. He told columnist Jeff Passan, "It was just the feeling baseball game me. I really can't explain it".
So you can't knock the guy for sticking with what he loves.
Also he felt like playing both would be too much. Not so much physically but as he wanted to be able to dedicate all of himself to just one sport.
Jeff Samardzija article about why he chose the MLB: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-mlb_07_samardzija022507&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Of course I'm sure the huge bonus he got from the Cubs for being a top pick didn't exactly shun him either. True he'll probably have to work in the minors for a bit to develop some skills, but I would think physically the wear and tear would be less on his body. So that definitely has to be an upside as well.

Guarunteed and larger contracts, longer careers, less demanding work-outs. I could think of 1000 reasons why someone would want to play in the MLB over the NFL if they had the skills to play both.
Wouldn't you much rather be making 5 million a year with bonus potential and contract restructuring at the end of three years, to play every 4th, 5th or 6th game? And if he does well, which is supposedly will, then he could make much, much more than that.
In the NFL it's tiring training camps, devestating hits and career-ending potential injuries. And you can be cut at any time and lose your money.

Because football players get peanuts compared to baseball players and their careers are drastically shorter. An NFL player lasts about 6 - 8 years on average in the league I would say while a baseball player can play until he is 40 and all the contracts in baseball are Guarantied MONEY!

Because baseball is a better sport than football. The NFL is a joke anymore, with all its glitz and showboating. It has become as relevant as pro wrestling or American Idol.
Major League Baseball, despite its inept leadership and its blind eye to its drug problem, is still a purer sport. He'll make more money (if he makes it), have a longer career, and won't be as beat up when he retires.

The MLB has guaranteed contracts and players have longer careers. They get paid even if they get hurt or don't play well.
NFL doesn't have guaranteed contracts and the pay is less.
MLB players have a better quality of life after baseball because they aren't hurt as much.

Money is better in MLB and he can have a much longer career with guaranteed contracts. Plus, who wouldn't want to play for the Cubbies
