I have a job washing dishes and I am of Native American heritage. I barely make minimum wage. I have friends of other ethinic heritage that have a similar job, have less job duties but are getting paid at least $7 hour. I am over 30 years old and a teenager who is of european/ white heritage working at the same place, without many of the job duties gets paid more. Any thoughts?

It's a simple fact racial, cultural, and gender inequalities DO exist when it comes to pay. Women are still payed seventy cents to any man's dollar. And there is also the glass ceiling effect which states that people of color and women can often only work their way up so far before they hit the glass ceiling and can get promoted no more (that's why there is little women and people of color as CEOs and such).

If you want more information on this topic I suggest emailing a Sociology professor at your closest University. You may not want to include your personal story but just ask for some good reading on this topic.

Other than that maybe you can point out the difference to the employer and ask in a nice professional way why the difference exists? This will give you at least an idea what is happening in your case. Living under oppression can make you unhealthy. I suggest getting another job if it is at all possible.

I am a Native woman myself. Take care of yourself!

Everyone is paid according to their worth. If you feel you deserve more, go elseware. Business is colorblind. -Go work for an Indian.

A related fact:

"Native" Americans are not native to this continent at all. DNA testing proves once and for all that Indians are merely Asians who followed the land bridge. (This is why Indians have a mongoloid-shaped, Asian skull and black hair.)

The oldest known remains ever found in both north and south America are that of Kennewick Man, found along the banks of the Columbia River. Kennewick man was white not Indian/Asian.

When the white man arrived for a second time to the Americas they found that the Indian/Asians hadn't yet invented the wheel and regularly practiced cannibalism.

White folks created the greatest, freest and most prosperous society the world has ever known.

as a native americam myself...I would have to say that firstly, you must consider that it has nothing to do with race.
It has to do with how long each employee has worked there...what the starting rate for each individual job pays and what kind of a jerk the boss is.
If you strongly feel that it is indeed a racial issue...you have to have concrete proof to be able to do anything about it.
I have, in the past, worked as a waitress at a steak house during the lunch shift. Pay was based on time of hire and we had to sign a statement saying that we would not discuss our pay wages with other employees.

If you include Illegal Immigrants, I'd say the hispanics are underpaid because current policy equates to a modern day form of slavery.

Never the less, in your circumstance, it may be because of traditional values: Many whites (particularly teenagers) are pushy and feel they are entitled, so he may have been pushy in demanding what he is paid. Many others, of humbler means and backgrounds, aren't as vocally assertive and end up settling for less. It may be a stereotype, but I find most native Americans to be culturally humble because of their ancestory (I imagine they are taught humility, too). So, what appears as racism on the surface, may be the result of your employer's reaction to taking the path of least resistance (pay the pain in the butt to shut him up, but go cheap on those that allow you to skimp on them).

I'd say Hispanics cause most of them work for what they can get since most of them come here illegally.
