I'm just a young girl minding my own business. The new rules of random stop and search in subways and buses...is this necessary?

The subway has thousands of entrances that terrorists can get thru with no detection. Does Bush think manning only a handful of entrances is going to stop a terrorist?

Soon the govt will have the right to stop me anytime anywhere to seach my bag for NO APPARENT REASON. I was just WALKING for godsake! What is this..Communist China?

MEANWHILE, MEXICAN AND CANADIAN BORDERS ARE WIDE OPEN!! WHO'S MANNING THE BORDERS?

Bush's unconstitutional "Patriot Act" gives them the right to do it. They have more rights now and you have less rights.

Maybe we should just stop airport security too - because that is a major hassle, and talk about invasion of privacy!
Anywhere that is contained like the subway system is going to have random bag checks - fill your bag with dirty underwear and tampons if you want to make a statement. Quite honestly, you're right it is a false sense of security because there are literally hundred of unmanned entrances to the NYC subway system where people can just walk in with a metro card and get in.
I would rather see them doing something than absolutely nothing. You weren't just walking - you were entering a mass transit point and therefore you agreed to the rules of that system, which is that they may search you just like the TSA may randomly pull you aside and completely go through your bag. As they say "it's in da rules."

As for the borders - well I am not so sure I am all fired up over Canada, but I would like to see someone at the Mexican border taking a little more interest in all the illegals crossing over here. That situation is just out of control!

I agree with random searches as long as there are also searches based on profiling, and that searches based on profiling are done more often.

However, I'd insist that the results of the searches can only be used to prevent a terrorist act. If they find the head of the mayor, a billion dollars, a kilo of cocaine, or anything else in your bag then you just received a free pass and cannot be prosecuted because of the concept of "the fruit of a poison tree".

To me, that would be consistent with the purpose of the Patriot Act.

Oh, and a couple of other things...BUILD THE FENCE!...and it was Congress that created the Patriot Act.

I understand your concern. Sometimes we have to give up some comfort for safety. I would rather be searched randomly, then feel there is no security at all. You are correct about your concern about our borders, write your Congress Person and let it be known that you are concerned. If enough people would do this and register to vote and get involved, maybe our elected officials would finally do something to secure our borders.
