I'm assuming you mean a sink trap. It holds water at the bottom and blocks the sewer gas from entering your house/business. And it helps if you drop something down the drain

a water trap, or "P-Trap" as it is more commonly called, is placed on a drain line underneath a sink or toilet (toilets have them built in) to keep the stink from the drain sewage from entering into the home or office.
