We live in a society in which it is expected that men are generally active and women are generally passive. In romantic terms, we still expect a man to 'pursue' a woman. It's very old fashioned, but that's still what most people expect.

In my experience, lots of women would be happy to call men first, only it's surprising how often men really don't like it if you do!
