Remember that the sun is a thermonuclear reactor. The solar wind contains radioactive particles. The earth's magnetosphere then captures these particles, creating a belt of radiation around the earth. Dr Van Allen discovered this belt, and it was named after him. Those same particles create the Northern and Southern Lights near the earth's poles.
