As an american living abroad I have a good perspective on this. I hear this often from people in Europe and the Middle East (I live in Europe and work in the Middle-East).

There are two things going on here: (1) That americans generally are not very interested in things going on outside the U.S. (2) That people perceive Americans to be disinterested.

Both are correct in many ways. The reason is that many Americans have very easy lives, they work, eat, play, watch tv, enjoying life basically. The fact that the U.S. is isolated is one factor. Americans aren't interested because generally they don't think they have to be. They truly believe that they are an "Empire" and everyone should be like them. The American "ego" is huge!

But, not all Americans are like this. Many are very interested in the world around them. Unfortunately these are very few in number.

But, truthfully, you can find people in any country that are similar to Americans. I travel often and find that most people in each country are not especially concerned with things going on outside Germany, France, England, Israel, Iran, etc.

Most people would rather not interact with the world and instead to enjoy the "islands" that they have created.

Why do non-Americans only highlight the worst aspects of our countries? Every country has their television-obsessed morons, perhaps America has more than others, but most people are not like that.
