The V5 isn't proof of legal ownership anyway. You should have got a receipt or some other proof of sale. If you don't have any proof then if it went to court the seller still owns it.

You can fill in a V62 form (available from the post office) to request a new V5 and the DLVA will send a letter to the seller informing him that someone else has asked for a new V5. If he doesn't contest this they will send you a new V5 then. If you had the green bit you'd send that with the V62 and it would be free, if you don't have the green bit you'll have to pay (was £19 last time i checked)

Of course if it turns sour you could get some payback by riding though as many speed cameras as you can (assuming you have the bike). Seeing as he owns the bike and it's still registered to him he'll get all the speeding fines.

Hopefully, when you paid you obtained a bill of sale. If you have the bill of sale and the VIN you should be able to contact your titling entity about obtaining the vehicle title. Without a bill of sale or a title in your name, it will be very difficult to show that you own the bike.

WELL IF YOU BOUGHT THE BIKE FROM A DEALER AND ARE FINANCING IT YOU WILL NOT GET THE PAPER WORK ON IT UNTIL IT IS PAID IN FULL! IF YOU PAID THE SELLER IN FULL THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN ALL THE PAPER WORK AND YOU ARE NOT THE RIGHTFUL OWNER UNTIL YOU TRANSFER EVERYTHING INTO YOUR NAME.
