I find it fascinating that the British people fork out to keep the royals in glory. They seem such sensible people when it comes to everything else. When a king did the job of a king, most countries had them. When things changed and kings were no longer needed, most countries then became became republics.
Personally, I think the British hold on to their royal family because they are the link with the British past - an expensive link, but a link. But aren't they, or a lot of them, of German origin?
Weren't the Windsors Battenburgs who changed their name to Windsor so as not to sound "German' during the war? It makes you think. Still, if the British taxpayers don't mind paying for them, that's their business. I'm glad my country doesn't have a present day monarchy, tho.

why does having a royal family make us any less democratic, the royals dont govern the country incase you hadnt worked it out, we 'vote' on a primeminister and parliment members, true the monarchy has a say, as do the lords but the commons has the power to push through bills regardless of what the royals say.
we were a 'democracy' (of kinds) before the US or France or most other countries i assume you speak of prospering with royals. and has having royals really made us prosper any less. we were the worlds unriveled economic and millitary superpower for centuries.

I suspect the tourist argument is correct. Tourists won't stop coming but the Royal family is probably responsible for bringing in millions of tourists every year and create a lot of publicity for the country.
Seen as they have no real power, I suspect they do more good than harm (except when they do or say something dumb, which happens a lot).
The family might become a liability when a fool sits on the throne.

why do you need a president ?
In UK you guys don't have free elections and parties ?
demoskratos (Greek) demos - people ; kratos - rule
"rule by the people" - by people means citizens; but not everyone who is a "resident" is recognized as a citizen that so the elected "leaders" are not really representing the whole population. And that was the case even in ancient Greek city-states where the democracy was coined ... so many things need to be changed ...and is not so simple.

It was said that a Presidency would cost more than the present Royal Family.
Let's stick with the present system, it works.
Why would we want ANOTHER politician with power?
