All of the above are very good suggestions no doubt, but do not forget to visit Hyderabad, the city of Nawabs, famous for Charminar, Golconda Fort, Salarjung Museum, mouth-watering, tasty & delicious dishes you won't find anywhere else in the world & an old world charm combined with the I.T. supremacy that has made Hyderabad the fastest growing city in India. !!

Heck, staying in India i've been visiting as many places as i can whenever i find the time. The place is too vast and all the places i've visited are equally beautiful. Each place has an atmosphere of its own. So i suggest if u can find the time visit all the states in india.

India is a very very big geographical area with very long history behind it. It has several states, hundreds of languages are spoken (1618 languages in total), celebrates 29 big festivals in a year, and there are more than 6400 castes and many religious sects. Please understand this. All this adds to the life in India and over a long period it has added to monuments, folklores, rituals, places et al. I feel one life is too insufficient to visit all the best places in India. I do travel a lot and trek a lot and after almost 20 years now I feel I won't be able to experience all of India in my lifetime. Still I will suggest: 1. Few places in Himalayas ( Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh etc) 2. Forts of Maharashtra 3. Goan Beaches 4. Few sanctuaries particularly "silent valley" in Kerala. Be there in the dense forests of Madhya Pradesh ( near Pachmarhi areas). Be in dense zone between Mysore and Ooty areas. And be in the ever green forests in North Eastern states, too. 5. Visit Fatehpur Sikri ( near Agra). It is more enchanting than the Taj Mahal ( trust me on this). 6. Spend a couple of days near Lonar crater and Devgiri Fort ( Aurangabad) along with Ellora + Ajantha caves. 7. Udaipur city and Chittorgarh fort in Rajasthan. I can go on and on. And am aware that even the list above will take you across India in a criss cross fashion. But I can't help really. But do visit my beautiful country. You will find people are very co-operative and we believe in "guest is God". Enjoy our hospitality. And then may be you will have found the best place in India i.e. our hearts.

Asking what is the best place to visit in India is really like asking what is the best food in the world. Every person has his or her own likings. So really the question you would want to ask yourself is what is it that you like, the mountains, the beach, history, deserts etc and thats what wud decide the place to visit. Also how many days of travel and holiday are you planning and more specifically in which season? India is a large country with huge cultural heritage and vast variety. Every state in India has its own unique signature and some history. Himachal for mountain holidays, Rajasthan for desert and history, Delhi for a mix of new and old, Lucknow for shopping, Calcutta for a mix of everything, Goa for fun filled sands, Kerala for its intrigue, East for mystic, Hampi for its world heritage sites, Agra for the Taj Mahal, Corbert / Gir /Ranthambore etc for wildlife, and so and so forth. So decide 1st on budget, 2nd on season, 3rd on duration, 4th on what region and then maybe you can decide on what to see in India.

You may want to visit http://www.incredibleindia.org/ , the official website of the Dept of Tourism in India for the details about each holiday destination in India. Enjoy your holiday in India.

I will suggest you to go to Rajasthan. It is called Golden Triangle. Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan. In December I was in Rajasthan. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur are the best places in Rajasthan. I did not like Jaisalmer. There are other small small place around those cities.
