Perms went out for macho men in 1981 it also was a very good year for mullets back then.

I don't think men thought they were macho , the few that did get a perm, they had to do something with their uncontrollabel hair.

I remember when I was 9 in 1977, I saw my dad and my step mom getting a perm at the same time. I thought it was funny to see my daddy in perm rods, like the women. He always was a brave stoner. He ended up with a huge afro, just like a black guy.

As far as I recall it never was Macho.
This was always snickered at when I was a kid.
To see a man or a woman with over permed hair was ridiculous, the trend has changed to a softer more natural looking curl.

Actually truth be known, it was never macho to have a perm. Some guys did it, but their macho creds were severly damaged when they did it.
