In my opinion, i believe you should try checking out the acer laptops and Asus laptops. They're quite cheap (probably because they don't put much effort into designing the laptop casing unless you're checking out the Acer Ferrari or the Asus Lamborghini or so), unlike the HP or the VAIO which has quite a piece of design on it, making it cost more than the acer or the asus.

Shop around. You can get Laptops for less than that. The one I'm using cost me less. Dell do some good deals
