Many people from Britiain started emigrating to other parts of the Commonwealth as it existed at the time, so there was an exodus to places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Rhodesia.

The reason was exactly the same as it is today - in search of a better life. Britain was suffering from a post-war economic depression and there was the prospect of starting a new life elsewhere.

Hundreds of thousand of Britons left UK for resettlement in Australia, New Zealand and Canada in the immediate post-war years following World War 2. This started in about 1947 with assisted passage - for example an assisted passage to Australia cost about £10 - with a three month sea journey.

Please note that until the late 1960s Australia maintained a 'whites only policy' on immigration.

A lot went to the three dominions of Canada,Australia and New Zealand as all three countries welcomed new immigrants especially skilled workers and professionals and as they were still developing countries the opportunities seemed endless and standards of living way better than the UK which was still recovering from war.For instance rationing didn't finish in UK until the early fifties and the majority lived in cramped houses with no indoor plumbing. The colonies were a new start.

As you may have gathered by now, the answer is Australia. Britain, as one poster put, had been sending people to Australia for years, but what made this different from previous times, is then you no longer needed to have a criminal record.
