They will going to be looking at how well you fit within their social work program (not all schools of social work are the same). You will want to be fully familiar with the schools mission statement and objectives and the program of study they offer. Give consideration to how this fits with what you want to do. They will also want to understand what has prepared you to enter an honors program generally and social work specifically. They will be looking at your ability to critically reflect on your life and experiences and how this prepares you for a career in SW. DA

The fact that you really want to study this subject means that you have a good chance. That is the main thing they will be looking for - your enthusiasm and interest in the subject is the best recommendation.

They have invited you for interview and this means that they think you are a suitable candidate.

You didn't mention when the interview is, but if there is time, it would be helpful to read a book called "Introduction to Social Work" - although I guess you have already done this.

They will ask you "Why are you interested in studying social work?"

""What are your thoughts for the future, would you like a career on Social Work?"

They might ask you if there is a particular area that interests you, eg, adoption and fostering, child protection, etc.

"What experience have you ad that makes you think you would be able to cope with the client group?"

(Mention any voluntary work, TV programmes you've seen, books you've read. Personal experience such as, "I am a good listener, I am interested in people, I think I have the skills - being perceptive, with firm boundaries, very keen to learn more.....")

The day before the interview, set out the clothes you are going to wear (comfortable clothes you feel good in, formal but not too severe, or too tight!)

Have any certificates and documents you need ready.

Have a lovely long relaxing bath and an early night. You have done everything you can. Just do your best!

Wishing you good luck - let us know how you get on!!

I wouldn't worry about it (even though I know how pointless it is to say that!) I studied BA Social Work for two years before leaving due to illness. The interviews are quite relaxed, with a member of faculty staff and a social worker there usually. They ask questions such as why do you want to do Social Work (and don't answer 'because I want to help people!') They also ask about basic points of legislation, but don't worry if you can't remember any because they don't expect you to know that much. Some universities give you a scenario and ask you what you would do in this situation. They are not testing your social work knowledge, rather your base ability to assess. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Hi, i have an interview in two universities for this course aswell. I have done some enquiring and the advice I was given was firstly read up on the code of practice for social care workers, you can get a copy by phoning 02920226257. One uni i am going to is an interview and 1hr exam on a scenario regarding what i would to if....... and the other uni is just an interview so different universities vary. The other piece of advice i was given was to read and listen to differnt events to show some knowledge.for ex, the young boy who was extremely obese, etc. I hope this helps and good luck for the future.

hi im on my first year of this course, depends on where your going i s'pose to what the interview will be like...but i can give you an idea of the sorts of questions i was asked! Stuff like...what has made you want to work as a social worker? What do you think you will be able to offer to service users? Have you ever been in a situation where you have witnessed discrimination, or being discriminated against and how did you deal with this? Those sorts of questions really. Just be yourself...theyre not looking for snooty academic people theyre looking for people with communication skills, non-judgemental people, with life expieriences. Someone who service-users will feel comfortable with!!! Good Look anyhow hope ive helped you a little!
