Actually I would probably use FreeBSD for any server application hell yahoo uses it. It is NOT LINUX. If I were 2 use linux I would go with Fedora Core.

CentOS, Fedora for full open source.

RedHat ES if you want fully supported and backed servers.

Personnally I like Fedora as it has been proven fairly stable and has not had any MAJOR issues. Plus it doesnt cost much. However, If I were brand new to linux and the company you work for wants dependablity and support Go with ES

Sounds like a question I ask my students. If it is to be a server, you take Debians or Redhat. If it is a desktop SUSE or Ubuntu.
If it needs to be a security server (IE transaction server) you flip to OpenBSD, which is not Linux
