Google makes money by selling "prime" advertising space. The top searches in the blue box are paid advertisements. That is how most free websites make money, others by asking for donations or they are self supporting.

Affiliations. Everytime someone visits Google.com a company gets money, so that company gives google money. It just so happens that Google has many affiliates, so many companies are getting money, and giving a lot of money to Google.com.

The Advertising on their site is paid for, and it sure is expensive, I mean think how many people see that.
