About 13 years ago, I saw a programme called 'It's a Mystery'. They ended one episode with a little riddle. 'A girl walks into a shop & picks up a book. She takes it to the counter & places it there. She then hands the shop attendant £5 as payment for the book. After paying, she leaves the shop, but she doesn't take the book. Why?' I missed the following episode, which was to reveal the answer. It's now been bugging me for the past 13 years. Does anybody know the answer to this riddle?

Was it a library book and she was paying the fine for bringing it back late?

Are you sure it was that she went in a picked up a book because the payment of a library fine would fit in if the riddle just said that she went in and placed a book on counter, etc.

Otherwise I don't know. Think I'll keep an eye on this to se if anyone else knows, because if it's that she picked up the book inside the shop then the library fine idea wouldn't work.

Book is slang for a wager. Making book is when you take money for a wager. The five dollars was her wager and the book was whatever she was betting on.
