I have 2 friends that have both applied for jobs advertised in the jobcentre but it was for an recruitment agency so they signed up at the agency to be eligible for it, but then when the agency phoned them up later that day to offer them work but a totally different job they applied for

Once a recruitment agency has your details they will NEVER leave you alone. I had this problem they were still calling me asking me to go to interviews even when I had already started a new job!!!!!

This happens ALL the time. I recently found a new job (by myself in the end) and I had the same problem. I never trust agencies now.

Basically what happens is that the agencies advertise fake jobs or real jobs with a fake higher salary to get you interested. Then they say that they need to register you so you can be eligible for that job. Then they send you other jobs. When I asked before about the jobs advertised they gave my a pack of lies saying "that job shouldn't still be there as the vacany has already been filled" or "they are looking for someone who is more experienced". It's rubbish.

I signed up to three agencies and I only heard from a couple of them and both times they were offering a job that was not what I told them I was looking for.

At the end of the day it is best to avoid them and look for work yourself in the local paper or through friends. That's how I found my job and I only did it in 2 months. If I'd left it up to agencies, I'd still be looking and be probably no where finding one. They are stupid. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

I see you're in London, I'm from the U.S., but if job agencies are the same there as here, then that is a very common scenario. Here we call them Temp Agencies, and you actually work for that temp agency - when you apply for the job, you are actually just giving them your skills and resume, and you are eligable to be placed in any job of which you are qualified for. Usually with a temp agency, you are sub-contracted out to the business who hires you, and after a set period, usually 90 days, the business has the option of keeping you on full time and then you would actually be hired by that business, and no longer work for the temp agency. If the business does not keep you, then the agency will place you in the next available job that you are qualified for. They can be a great outlet to find work when you are in need, but it's just a little more rigamorall than the normal interview and hire way of getting a job. Hope that helps! Good luck! :)

At least the agency gave them a call, agencies are supposed to contact you for jobs that they think you are suitable for. I have registered with agencies and have heard nothing from them.
