Because computers give instant gratification, a way to judge one as having won or lost, where books do not. Computers also do not require actual thought, you can make them do what you want through either trial and error, or asking someone else, and convince yourself you're smart for learning a trick like a carneval pony. Computers provide the images, whereas books require you to comprehend the text and construct your own. Computers give you control over the environment, once you learn how to manipulate the graphic system and make things happen. Books don't give you any control, the author is telling a story.

A computer gives you interaction and an immediate response as well as enabling you to not use you imagination. Reading a book, means that you have to slowly let the story develop and use your mind to picture the places, things, and people you are reading about.
