The elliptical nature of Earth's orbit is due entirely to the original force which tossed it away from the solar disc (now the sun). If the momentum of this toss had been greater, the Earth's orbit would have been more highly elliptical, or it might have been tossed completely out of the solar system forever. If it had been a slightly less violent toss, Earth's orbit might have been perfectly circular (and it really is very close to being circular) or if it had been even less violent, it might have spiraled right back into the disc and never become a planet at all. the sun is the biggest source of gravity in our solar system. The gravitational force of the sun pulls objects straight to it because the planets are in motion

The planet is oblate spheroid and not sphere. Oblate spheroid is a shape between oval & sphere. The relation is with the rotation of earth on it's axis and the formation of tides.

There are no other forces acting on it except gravity.

Gravity is directly responsible for this phenomenon. The moon's gravity attracts the earth and vice versa. Therefore as the moon attracts the earth, it can't pull the ground towards it as it has more gravity. The tides are then attracted towards the moon and hence they rise. The rotation and the attraction causes the earth this shape.

The Earth's shape is elliptical due to its rotation. The rotation of the Earth causes it to "bulge" around the equator due to centrifugal force (the opposite reaction to centripital force).

The exact reason for this phenomenon is:

Earth bulges out because of its rotation and centrifugal force acting on it.

No gravity is not at all responsible for this.

chaney is absoloutely right. the ellipticall shape of the earth is due to its rotational speed as well as the material from which it is made. if the earth was more "solid" it would not bulge the way it does!!!!!

There is no reason for that . It naturally happened .
