It doesn't smell all the time but it can be quite strong at times. We've swept the chimney but we've not long moved in and the house was empty for two years. We installed the woodburner when we moved in so it's new.

I would have to say it is the type of wood you are burning. Something other than hardwood. You may also have a downdraft coming down the chimney which is pushing the smell into the house. Most fireplace chimneys need to be at least 3 feet above the house peak to work properly.

Is it a sulphurous smell? Like eggs? Try changing the type of wood you're burning first of all and see if that makes a difference.

Are the times when it smells worse when it's windy outside? As in the above answer, make sure that all the exhaust smoke/gases are going out of the chimney and are not being forced back into your house.
