It came into use when the partners of our National football team were involved in a tournament and the girls did their own thing while the bots were training. The group of these ladies was termed a WAG. It is also the movement of a dog's tail when it is pleased.

during the world cup there seemed to be more in the papers about the wife's and girlfriends of the footballers then the actual footballers, I think that why it got abbreviated to WAG
