We bought a hamster at the weekend and have discovered that she seems to be using her bedding as a toilet as well as a bedroom?

Just wondered if that was normal and if not how can we stop it?

Mine do that too, but like some others have answered here you could try using a hamster "potty" in one corner. You could buy one from a pet shop, but you could also just use a clean jar, turned on its side. I have a jam jar in the corner of my hamsters' cages and they (almost always) use that for their potty....but just for peeing....they still seem to prefer doing their droppings in their bed, or anywhere else. Maybe because their droppings are dry and so don't soil their sleeping place so much.

Hamsters are usually very clean animals and will try to poop in a corner away from their bed. You could try moving the poop to a corner and hope she gets the message, otherwise leave her where she's happy! They eat their poop sometimes, and if you keep her home (is it a good size?) clean she should be OK.
Edit: Do you have her in a large glass tank? That would give her room to move and if there was enough substrate it would satisfy her digging needs. Hamsters like to burrow. Not as much as gerbils though. A large glass tank is definitely best for them.

Yes, hamsters will do their droppings in their bedding, even their nest, and quite often wee in one corner of the cage. This is normal, so you need to make sure that they are cleaned out weekly - you wont stop this behaviour, although it is possible to buy a rodent litter tray and litter from your pet store! No guarantees that they'll use it though, mine just used to roll around in it as a dust bath!

yes its normal they do sometimes do it in there bedding, if its just settleing in it might stop doing it after a while and will do it anywhere and will wee up just one corner.but if u are not happy with it u can get hamster toliets from any pet shop, they r like mini litter trays they go , but if its anything like mine he use to just either lie in it or dig it all out everywhere. lol hope that helps.

Yes its normal for your hamster to do this as she gets older and settles in to her new home she will do it more in the cage normally in one corner This what my hamsters did.

~ hi ~ Our little Poppy does the comparable element. She has her sound asleep section set-up interior the enclosed wheel that sits outdoors the cage (she has a wheel she makes use of interior her cage), by using the the third day she had placed her bedding interior the wheel so it ought to her little "mattress room". Then i began out noticing droppings in there, so I purely clean the wheel out each and every couple of days. it rather is totally positive! =)
