March 17 is the feast day of st Patrick, it has been celebrated in Ireland for centuries, and where the Irish go so goes st Patricks day.

Apparently, St. Patrick killed, drove out, smacked around a certain number of Celts / Druids in a way to cram Christianity down Irish throats. And so for this he is honored. Kind of like honoring Christopher Columbus...this butthead anhilated a race of people, all for the Pope, & moola for Spain. His friggin son was even worse, look this up.

Not really sure but my So says the Irish government instituted the day in celebration of his feats.

Most saints have their own day in the year. We just do not continue to celebrate most of them, unless the day has become secularized.
