The first thing i would suggest is to right click the speaker icon at the bottom of your screen and select open volume control, make sure it`s not set very low or any mute boxes are checked.

Mortis is correct, and you can also make sure the leads to any speakers are properly connected. another thing, if that doesn't work, i've found is that RealPlayer can often over-ride my other audio programmes, such that if RealPlayer is installed and it's volume has been turned down or muted - all other audio is silent as well - even if I don't have RealPlayer open. check this, along with any other audio programme you have installed.

Check to see if the sound is muted and are your speakers plugged in and turned on? To check for muted sound, goto your Control Panel and select "Sounds and Multimedia". You should be able to see if your volume is muted there or if the volume has been turned down.

If you have the recovery disk for your computer then use that to reinstall the sound driver.
if you don't have it then go to http://www.belarc.com and download Belarc Advisor and run it, it will tell you your sound card.
Then after you find that out go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for it
