Many trees, although large, are capable of withstanding high winds. If you have worries, call a tree expert to look and evaluate the possibility of it breaking or falling during high wind.

Firstly, if you are worried, get a tree surgeon to come and inspect its health for you. They will also advise you if they think the tree is too near to your house.
However, most trees are unlikely to fall over, unless they are unhealthy. Secondly, if there are any other trees around it, don't cut them down. These trees will provide protection to the big tree, and if you cut them down you will put additional stress on the big tree and increase the risk of it blowing over.

my family thought the same in our garden, if you want to do something about it, then you can get the tree topped by a professional tree surgeon. it is best to get a professional as there are guidelines to follow, it needs to be done gradually as otherwise the roots will go into shock and if they are under your house which most likely they are, it could cause cracks in your floor and walls which obviously aren't good.

All the foregoing but have you checked your insurance? normally there is a clause about proximity of trees (there is on mine) so you may be at risk, better to cut it down as there could be root problems as well, the spread of the branches is a good indicator of how far the roots have travelled.

Ask your local council for advice, you may have to call in professionals to have it cut down for safety reasons.
