I believe that it is uncouth and a bad influence on youth. Many other sports with the same or even more physical exertion do not have this bad habit. The ruling body for these sports could easily insist on the players carrying a handkerchief or similar to use. This would not cause any problem to carry. These players would take great exception if a rival player spat at them and yet they will happily slide around in the same content that has been deposited on the pitch. What do you think?

It's a bad habit ... but when you play a sport like football the mud/grass sometimes gets everywhere...

or it could be the sweat dripping into your mouth ...

or maybe like tyson, you bite your opponents ;-))

there are lots of reasons why they may need to spit ... but not at each other ...

In the heat of the moment you honestly wouldn't think about sliding around in anything... and to be honest its not that bad ,... there is always more grass than spittle... ;-)

as for the handkerchief ... that must have been a joke .. right?

you don't sound like you played a lot of football...

Also I don't think that chewing gum should be spat on the pavement... but I would be greatly offended if it were spat at me instead ... as anyone would.

I can't stand it either. The only time I may spit is if a fly goes in my mouth and even then it is not a big spit more like blowing. Spitting is also a way of spreading TB.

Can't say whenever I have scored a goal I have slid on my belly to celebrate as you don't know what you are sliding on. I can't stand players who wear gloves so to have a handkerchief as well could be quite funny.

Can't say I see too much of it happening in rugby mindy you there probably isn't 1001 camers to catch every thing they do.

I couldn't agree more and the yobs always copy negative habits of their idols, all I see when I walk along the street are hoodies spitting everywhere. You've got to remember that when people's spit dries up it gets into the air we all have to breathe and hence diseases like TB and Asian Flu spread like an epidemic. It's gross to think you have to breathe in somebody's dried spit.

Tie them to the goal post and have 20 spectators spit on them for an hour.

,It's a disgusting habit that is unnecessary, but has become trendy.
There used to be signs on all lampposts in London about spitting and you could be fined..It was to eradicate T.B. you won't find any such signs or fines now, and T.B is on the increase.
