A stem cell is a primitive type of cell that can be
coaxed into developing into most of the 220 types of
cells found in the human body. Some researchers regard
them as offering the greatest potential for the
alleviation of human suffering since the development of
antibiotics.

Stem cells are the early undifferentiated or slightly differentiated cells that other cells 'stem' from (like a stem on a tree?). Once a cell is differentiated for example to make bone or blood that is all it can make. The earliest divided cells (in an animal fetus) 1..2..4..16..32.. can be separated and used to make entire cloned animals. After about 32 or 64, the cells begin to differentiate and form (adult-like) stem cells that can produce only limited types of tissue (such as bone, nerve, muscle, etc.). There should be little political controversy (IMHO) because it is ethical to prove concepts and procedures using animal cells before the question of using human cells should even arise.

Stem cells are young cells taken from blood taken from a baby's umbilical cord after birth.
These cells are then stored and can be injected into a patient where they will grow into healthy cells where the patient had some injury or illness such as Leukemia.

This is all I know on the subject...I hope it helps!
