The entire crisis is very sick, and the UN needs to step up to the plate, and help end it.
First the Sudanease leadership needs to be removed. Second an international aid movement needs to begin, so the people can get food, medical treatment, and shelter.

I think it is a tragedy, but where is the United Nations and what are they truly doing about the crisis. The United States will not engage in Dafur. The primary reason for this is because we do not have a vital national interest. Perhaps this is dishonest based on the fact that we will engage in countries like Iraq, but it is a fact none the less. If the United Nations would actually take the leadership role in the world which everyone expects perhaps these situations could be resolved. However, as long as the UN chooses to be a paper lion, poor, hungry and oppressed peoples around the world will continue to suffer.

First off, why do people act like the UN is some separate group.
We are the UN, we meaning America, Canada, Mexico, all nations. National governments agree on policy and then tell the UN to carry out that policy. The UN does nothing on its own.
On the question of Darfur.
UN peacekeeping troops can only enter a country with that Countries permission.
The Sudan has denied entry to UN Peacekeepers. But they have allowed African Union Peacekeepers in.
The United States is bank rolling the African Union Peacekeepers in the Sudan.
.
The UN Security Council could apply Article Seven and forcibly intervene in the civil war in the Sudan.
But that poses two problems.
First then the nations on the Security Council would be honor bound to contribute soldiers for such an intervention, which they do not want to do.
Secondly, how would the UN justify intervening in a civil war in Sudan, while ignoring the civil war in Iraq.
The American and International policy consequences of Iraq are such, that no politician will be able to forcibly intervene in any civil war again.
Such as we did in the former Yugoslavia we we went into Kosavo and bombed Serbia.
This will end up leading to future genocides.
The cost of the invasion of Iraq and the political posturing of those opposed to the invasion has lead the world to the point that interventions in the future will be sharply curtailed.

I hate what is happening in Darfur but we need to look at WHY it's happening before coming up with a course of action.
This is a genocide. Arab Muslims murdering, raping, and pillaging African Muslims and Christians. It's a civil war where only one side has weapons.
The WORLD needs to be involved in this. The UN has proven, again, that it is useless in these situations. It lacks the will and the forces to resolve the conflict.
Will people look to the EU? Will they look to China or India?
The US is doing what it can in other places. It would be nice if someone else would step up, occasionally.

It's OK to liberate the people in Darfur but it wasn't OK to liberate the people in Iraq? What a double standard.
Let the United Nations take care of it like they should have in Iraq. Iraq was blatantly disregarding UN regulations, yet the UN wouldn't do anything about it.

Isn't Sudan a sovereign nation? Isn't this a civil war? Does Sudan pose a threat to the United States?
Based on those questions, and the obvious answers, I'd say there isn't anything we can do about it. Sad, but the truth. I understand the French Army isn't doing anything, unless it's keeping Paris from burning, perhaps they'll do something.

The UN should be doing something, but there is no money in Darfur for them to steal. If the liberals don't want us in Iraq, you know they don't want to know about Darfur. Why are we still in Kosavo?

Do you know that people in the US die of hunger everyday? feed them first and then you can worry about "Darfur".
