Should it be a flat rate? A % of his gross/ net income? We reside in New York City, where rents are HIGH. He just graduated from college and was offered a $40k salary by a high powered bank.

He should be able to give you at least $100 per week for room, food and board. I am calculating 10% of $40K is $400 per month. Where the heck is he going to get an apartment in New York City for $400? In a cardboard Box or a flophouse? He should be grateful in paying you that money. If he protests, I would show him the door and tell him to get his own place.

My son doesn't make as much as your son has been offered, but we were charging him $100 a month rent to teach him responsibility. My husband and I are going to return the money to him when he moves out to help with his expenses. 40K still isn't much for NYC, but it's enough for him to pay a modest rent. I don't think $400-$500 is too much. He probably doesn't have a car since you live in the city, so he should be able to afford that amount no problem.

Look in the classified ads. See what the going rates are for efficiency apartments or room rentals. Charge him that. He's an adult now. Charging is rent is great way for him to start learning about the real world. If he complains, pack his bags and show him the door. The people who are saying it wrong for you to charge him rent are either kids themselves or never want their kids to move out.

Charge them the market rate for renting a room.

Take out what you need to cover real expenses then save the rest on their behalf towards a deposit for their own accommodation.

My Mum used to take half of my net income, for bed and board and bills ( not telephone)
If this seems a lot to you, then do your child a favour by opening a savings account for them and putting some of it in there, for when they need a deposit.....

Don't charge rent
You are suppose to provide for your children and not make money out of them
If you cant afford to support them ask them to leave rather
You are just selfish to ask for rent
