my docs recommend taking folic acid 3 months prior to conceiving and is especially essential during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to reduce the risk of a neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Folic acid can be found in dark green leafy vege.

YES! My reproductive endocrinologist says that all women of childbearing age should be taking a daily folic acid supplement of at least 400mcg. Should you become pregnant, having this in your system significantly decreases the risk of birth defects. Most people do not know, but the majority of neural tube defects occurs in the fetus before the woman even knows she is pregnant!

yep, start taking it - they say its best to take it at least three months before conception - but it really doesnt matter when you start. But you should stop at the end of the first trimester. good luck.
