I agree, plus as a Scotsman I don't want those weapons on my countries soil. It's interesting to note that hardly any Scottish MP supported the bill renewing Trident (it was carried by a majority of English MP's), so you wonder why a growing number of us up here want our independence? No filthy nuclear power!

And it's quite evil as well. Don't worry, I reckon if we ever get attacked by a nuclear weapon then the world wouldn't be worth retaliation anyway. I also believe the Russians or Americans would help us out.

Its a bit pointless trying to compete with the true powers of this world e.g. america, russia, china. I reckon england (apart from as a forward base for the american bombers is actually quite insignificant. Thats why I like it. We can have a neutral status and do well from the moneys of the others. :(Great football leagues as well). Providing we've still got commodities then there is little point in spending anything on big weapons. Pointless showboating on the part of the governments.

A necessary evil I'm afraid--this country does have other means at it's disposal with which to defend itself, which could be 're-vamped' and upgraded, it also has allies across the globe that it can turn to in times need...it's not as though we would be 'on our own' as it were. There is so much more that 20 billion could be spent on--a failing health service which could be stripped and rebuilt from the ground up--a transport and road industry that could be the envy of the world--an education system which fails some of our youngster's from poorer, more deprived areas--('the next generation')--the Victorian water and sewage pipe system all over Britain---there is so much more that this colossal amount of money COULD be spent on to the benefit of all in this country, without the necessity for more 'nuke's, but as usual, we the common people have to aver to the politico's that govern us, we didn't vote for trident--they did. As i said before--a necessary evil...but woe betide the people asking for my vote in future elections--ALL the party's can go jump!

Hi John M --- You Can,t seriously believe that we can do without the most Power-full and Efficient Defence System ?? with the Lunatics and Madmen around the world -- who would wipe us out in Seconds - Given the Opportunity , Plus the Fact that an "Unbeatable" Defence System protects the Population of these Countries "Ruled" by these Unstable Lunatics , who don,t give a Damn for their own people and the rest of the World ......

How can you think it is too expensive when in 2006 the budget for the NHS was £95 billion. For one year. The cost of Trident is a one-off.

I agree. This is tax payer's money and a weapon that will never be used.
If terrorism is the threat to our safety today then the gov't needs to find an appropriate way of fighting it. You can't do that with nuclear missiles.
A lot of good could be done in this country with £20 billion

Yep it is. They closing down A&E departments all over the UK because the "cant afford them" but they can afford to upgrade nuclear warheads. Is this country that cowardly that it cant stand up to their "own" elected government.

No it is not. I for one don't want to live in a world where only rogue states possess nuclear weapons because the rest of us consider the weapons too horrible to use.
