Toner is the solution to large pores. the purpose of toner is to tone and tighten your pores. A way to mask large pores is to put on loose powder (which fills the pores) before you put on your foundation.

Apply a small amount of Vaseline over the area. It provides a smooth covering. It gets into the pores but will not clog them or cause pimples, in fact your skin will be the cleanest it's ever been. Your skin will be smooth and ready for foundation, the makeup will not go into the pores. Pat dry and apply powder to take away any shine or oily look. Vaseline is also a great makeup remover and moisturizer.

I have large pores near my nose and use a alpha/beta peel regularly to keep them clean and minimized. I would not recommend vaseline since its a petrolatum and will make you more greasy and will cause foundation to slip off. (Read Dr. Denese's book!!!)
When I wear foundation I do the cleanse & tone and skip moisturizer (just for spot treatments) but use a primer instead with antioxidants which tightens pores.
Everyone is different but I'd recommend an alcohol free toner and quality primer with nightly peels 2-3 times a week.

if you use a primer it should create a smooth surface for the foundation to go on. smashbox do a good primer, i got mine from QVC.
also a good powder does wonders - elizabeth arden, flawless finish - loose powder - its excellent.
to get rid of your open pores -
soak a face cloth in hot water and put it on your face to open your pores -
take a pore reducing toner and wipe it across the open pores -
splash with cold water to close the pores.
also - drink more water -use a clay face mask once a week - and try a pore strip once a week too.
good luck

Pur Minerals make a serum called "See No More Pore" unlike most primers and skin care products claiming to minimize the appearence of pores this product is totally natural - with no fillers. It's also a treatment so as you continue to use it the visibiity of your pores will decrease. Try it! $18 @ Ulta.

Tinted moisturiser isn't as heavy as foundation, and will fill your pores without clogging them, making them vitually invisible! (hint- try Dove Tinted Moisturiser in beige if you have pale to medium skin).
