They cause infections because they get rid of bacteria in the body. ALL of the bacteria. Including the good bacteria that maintains the healthy balance in there. When the good bacteria gets wiped away with the bad, the bad can grow with nothing to combat it.

Best way to combat a yeast infection is an ounce of prevention. Eat a yogurt with active cultures every day. I require a high protein breakfast, so I usually eat my yogurt as a snack between breakfast and lunch. Antibiotics often cause yeast infections. You can start treating it right away. In the event that the treatment burns, you can use organic plain yogurt. Here's how it works... Take a tampon, push it about half way out of the applicator. Dip the end in yogurt and insert into the vagina. I know it sounds gross, but I swear it works like a charm, immediately soothes and relives the itching and it is an all-natural alternative to the chemicals in monestat. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, so all yeast infections burn me really bad. My doctor toldme about the yogurt option. It's also much less expensive, lol. If you think I am a weirdo, look up all natural alternatives to treating yeast infections and I promise you will see that a lot of people use this option. Also, with yogurt, there is no risk of drug interference. Good luck.

A woman's vaginal area is a natural environment all on it's on. There are "good" bacteria and "bad" (yeast) bacteria there that are in a very delicate balance. The "good" bateria keeps the yeast bateria from growing too much and causing a problem. Unfortunantly, the good bacteria is much more sensitive to anti-biotics than the yeast is, so when you take the antibiotics, as they pass through your system they end up killing lots of the good bateria (which usually keep the yeast under control) so the yeast is able to multiply and become a problem. The creams or suppositories restore the environment to be one friendly to the "good" bateria and not friendly to the yeast so the "good" grows and is able to get the yeast under control again, thus restoring the healthy, delicate balance. This is also why your Doc will tell you to be careful with douches, etc as these can also cause the problem. Anything that could affect the natural balance could do that.

Antibiotics increase your susceptibility to yeast infections because they change the vagina's natural pH, which is normally slightly acidic, and kill off healthy bacteria. A change in acidity creates or allows for an overgrowth of yeast.
