What are the laws about tinting your car's windows?

The laws vary from state to state. Most window tinting companies will steer you away from anything that's illegal to do. No states allow the windshield to be tinted, though you can install tint on the top few inches in some places. Customarily, also, you cannot tint the front side windows beyond a certain level. This is to aid other drivers in seeing where you are looking. Back side windows and rear window are usually unrestrained.

The shop doing the work will know the legal tint limit, don't go over it.
