Babylon 5 of course. 6 major races, a 5-season arc (it's great to watch on DVD, that way you see the continuity from beginning till end). Mira Furlan (starring on Lost) absolutely Shines in this show. Great script. Practically no continuity glitches. It's got several levels - some would call it a political drama as opposed to sci-fic drama. Groundbreaking for its time - a sci-fi show that dealt with religion, terrorism, politics, social discrimination. Alien hairdos are a bit funky though.

I recommend Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda because it is a great scifi show. Although not exactly in the same vein as Star Trek, there are similiarities. It's in reruns on the SCIFI channel and the complete series is available on DVD.

Star Trek is classic (though Voyager was probably my favorite of the various series)
I've had a lot of friends endorse Firefly
I love X-Files
Alien Nation was one of my favorites (though it does try a little too hard to address issues of prejudice)
