I have recently gone back swimming. I am about a stone overweight and am trying to shift this weight. After going a few weeks, I have noticed my general fitness has improved and I think now I need a training plan. Has anyone any ideas on how to go about making a good training plan?

I''d prefer to stick to the swimming for now...I just want to get more from the sessions. I am also running and doing aerobics so I have a range of exercise

Have you tried Yoga? helps improve your flexibility and nice to do on the easier days that you might want to have in training, though there are some instructors who are insane fitness nuts who are very strong in their teachings. Hope this helps

Im on the high school varsity swim team so trust me i know what im talking about! like the other person said when u swim u loose weight, but ur trying to find a training plan.

In practice we would start out with a 500 free style (500 yards=20 laps in a 25 yard pool if u didnt know) just to get warmed up. then u swim each stoke.

1st 100(4 laps) slow and easy.
2nd 100 strong and hard.
3rd 100 as fast and hard as u can.

*make sure u take a brake after each 100 dont over do it.*
then to end it swim a 200 (8 laps) im (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and free style) very very slow and relaxing, concintrate on how ur body is moving and make sure ur doing it corectly!!!

do this 3-5 days a week ull be ready in no time

The plan you use depends on your ability.. not your weight.
Some swimmers can swim 2500 metres casually in under 45 mins (efficient swimmers would do it in under 30 mins if they push it).... others would get completely exhausted before they got to 1000m.

Try and allocate around an hour or an hour and a half. See how many laps you can comfortably complete in that time.

Then you need to mix it up every day otherwise you will get bored... but generally you don't need to worry about tapering etc.... just aerobic fitness ....

Do a warm up consisting of about 1/3 of your total distance.
Do some strength training for 1/3.
Do some interval training for 1/3.
Finally do add a few laps to warm down and get your heart rate back to a comfortable level.

I'm on the Keller High Varsity swim team and my Coach is amazing. Lena Darnell. Look her up if you want proof. An example of a warmup we've done would be 10x100's Freestyle- four of the 100's are Kick with a kickboard on 3:00 (three minutes). The next four are swim Freestyle on 1:30 (one minute and thirty seconds). The next two are swim IM (25 Fly, 25 Back, 25 Breast, 25 Free) on 1:35 (one minute and thirty five seconds). You can adjust the time to where you have no more than 10 seconds of rest between each 100. Good luck!

Swimming is quite funny actually, cause whatever way you swim you will lose weight everywhere because you use ALL of your body. So whilst in the pool, dont follow no "plan", if you want to tone your upper body more than your lower, get on font and dont move your legs, just use your arms. And if you want to tone your lower half, get on your back and kick your legs. You will feel the muscle working.

And before you swim, eat an hour before, carbs, like a sandwich or two. Then when you finished, eat some protein and carbs. Thats all you need to do. Oh and a little sauna when you go wont do no harm either!! Enjoy xx

Add just as much time with weights as you do with swimming. Thats what I do. Works great and really fast.

do whatever else you do during the day, but spare lunch hour (thats from 12.30 to 2pm )on swimming. While at it make use of breast stroke, and you are there
