This is done in two steps
Firstly, you have to configure the wireless router. This is different for each make and model (please provide make and model). You need to follow the manufacturers instructions to get to the router admin page. Once you have done that, you need to do three things
1) look for a checkbox to enable the wireless router
2) Select a name for the wireless network, or otherwise known as an SSID. This can be anything , i.e my_network.
3) Turn on encryption. This is important, as it stops other people within range from abusing your internet connection. Select WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) encryption, as it is very secure. Put in a password of 10 characters or more, and write it down somewhere. You will need it for your laptop.
Close and save settings.
Once you have done this, you need to configure your laptops wireless connection. If there is a switch for your wireless network card on your laptop, make sure to TURN IT ON. On my laptop, this switch is at the front on the laptop, and a light switches on when it is active. If you do not do this, it wont work.
Now, we need to configure the wireless connection. If you are running windows XP, select 'start' 'control panel' 'network connections'. Locate the 'wireless network connection' in the list. Right click and select properties. Select the 'wireless network' tab. Click on 'view wireless networks'. Your network should be in the list. If it isnt, you have a problem. Either the wireless network card is not turned on, or the router is not configured correctly.
If your network is in the list, go back to the 'wireless networks' tab and select 'add'. For SSID, put in the name of the wireless connection. This must be the same as step 2
Select 'WPA-PSK' as the network authentication setting. Select TKIP as the data encryption setting
Put in the password used in step 3 of the router setting, confirm it, and select OK.
Thats it, hopefully it should work. My wireless network is set up this way.

call your internet service provider. You are paying them and it is their job to make it work.
