Since at least the early 1750s my ancestors did live in the mountain areas of the America. I still have relatives in those same mountains and so, yes, I would live in those mountains then or now.
As to life style, I was born before penicillin was developed, the house I lived in had no running water or telephone, electricity was a sometime thing, heat was by wood. Although we had a tractor, much of the farming was accomplished by horse. We raised our own food. Our lives were good and full. Modern development of things that improve our lives is great, but coming to rely on “things” as necessary parts of our lives is not a good idea.

Hell yes... I would live in the mountains now if I could. My dream house is a Log Cabin in the mountains.

would i have? Yes - the chance of finding mineral deposits and being able to claim the land was high.....
so yes because wealth would have been somewhat easier to come into...
