The decreasing death rate applies primarily to infants delivered during the third trimester (27 weeks or more of gestation) who weigh at least 2.2 pounds (1000g) and are without birth defects. When gestational age and birth weight are below these levels, the death rate increases.

ANYTHING is possible. The youngest surviving baby was born at 22 weeks last October. I hope everything turns out okay for you sweetie. Though it is better for the baby to stay in the womb for as long as possible, sometimes that doesn't happen. With so many technological advances nowadays, your baby would have a fighting chance :)
Good luck

Hi April,
I work on a Neonatal Unit and we have babies from 24 weeks who survive so it is possible. However there are never any guarantees and sometimes the child is left with disabilities. Time in hospital varies depending on how poorly baby is but an average baby with no problems is usually ready for home around the date they were due to be born.

I think that a child can survive if delivered at 27 weeks, but it's a long, tough road for everyone. I think that 23-24 weeks is about the lowest for viability, but even after that, there are usually major complications and developmental delays. Every day in utero makes a huge difference in the baby's development.

Yes it can survive at 27 weeks. I had my son at 29 weeks and 3 days. He spent 5 weeks in hospital he weighed 1.72kg. He was big for his gestation. He just turned 2 on Saturday. Weighs 13kg and is 89cm tall. He has had no major health problems. When he was in hospital I met other mothers with premmies that were born at 25 weeks and weighed only 500g and spent like 5 months in hospital.

it is really hard to say...i do not think it would be a easy thing for the baby to make it but some has...but they have been sickly most usually and have a long hospital stay...it is best of course that the baby stay full term...but know one really knows how things will go because they can not predict any unknown or unseen thing that might happen...i had a set of twins at 7 months and neither one of them made it...there lungs were not developed enough and they did not weigh enough either...

A recent TV news report, showed a baby of 21weeks survived, so maybe, but the chances of survival they say are slim, you may be able to search the news report,

I had a baby in March 2001 who was born at 23 weeks and he did not survive.......I had a daughter in 2005 born at 33 weeks who is fine and in January my son was born at 28 weeks and 3 days via c-section due to severe pre-eclampsia....he came home after just over 8 weeks and $600,000 in medical bills........luckily we were in a good hospital and have good insurance......
We endured weeks of worry, brain scans, echocardiograms, spinal taps to name a few......only after 6 or so weeks in the hospital were we sure he was going to make it...we still have some prematurity issues, he is on a home monitor, medications and we have nurmerous appointments ahead of us......
Prematurity is one of the scariest things.....your child is so tiny and frail and I wasn't allowed to hold him for four weeks after he was born......
Good luck to you.

yes , babys as young as 22weeks have survived depends on what type of care baby needs, gets. Long of a stay depends on weigh.... and eating, breathing and sickness.
