At around day 21 every month of my cycle my hormones alter and along with some other physical changes my mood really dips and I just feel so low & awful I dont know what to do. It generally only feels bad for one day, but I feel angry and irritable and like bursting into tears all one after the other. I feel low, and anxious & wonder how will I last the day out?! Thankfully, it subsides after this day but does anyone have this and have any 'pick me ups' or advice on how to feel a bit better?? Iask because I often cause problems for myself by getting into sillly arguments with people or getting upset over silly things......but I just cant help it! Please help.....any advice from fellow sufferers would be great!

I do know what you are experiencing - in my youth I too use to suffer terribly - Vitamin B6 and B12 or just take a B group vitamin every day for one or two months see if you notice any difference.

You could also try Efamol or Evening Primrose Oil - Visit with the health food shop they will be able to advise you more.

Try them together or separately if you want to see if either or both works, would give it one or two months to see if there is any change though.

Also a good diet will make a difference - if you are not eating enough fruit and fresh veg and too much chocolate and crisps this too will have an affect.

Hope you feel some relief real soon. Good Wishes

Evening primrose.

Also make sure that you get regular exercise all month round.

Regular exercise encourages the release of endorphins into the body. These are called happy hormones. A good diet should also be followed also remembering that at around your period due date your blood sugar levels drop and that is why the body craves carbs.

Have you also ever thought of going on the pill?? (Birth control if you are in the States) This can help very bad symptoms of PMS/T.

Good luck

I used to have this problem in a very bad way. I tried several things. If a doctor suggests you use anti-depressants, don't do that. They talked me into trying that and it was a horrible experience. What ended up working for me was to take birth control pills... and then to take 5mg of valium 3x day for 3 days each month when I knew it was going to happen. I did that for 2 years... then when i wanted to get pregnant I stopped valium+"the pill" --- and after I had the baby my hormones shifted and it is not a problem anymore... I get just a little pissy, but no big deal. Soooo... I guess having a baby can help too! btw.... make sure you are on the pill if you take valium, as it does cause birth defects.... and although valium is addictive, taking it for 3 days out of the month is not a problem. I had not issues stopping that after 2 years.

You have sussed out your cycle well enough to know which days you will find hard, thats a good start! you can go along the lines of prescription drugs to help symptoms, but it seems a shame to take drugs all month just to help out on a few days. My advice is to have your "me" time on those days. Maybe a bubble bath, lots of goodies to eat and a good film? If you can feel yourself at breaking point with people, instead of snapping,be honest and tell them that yoour hormones are playing you up, you will be surprised how they will sympathise, and by then the moment has passed, with no arguments. Good luck!

well i sympathise and emapthise with you as most women of the world propably will. Im afraid the only thing you can really do is ride it out. I get exactly the same effects, however mine is generally more emotional. i tend to just get paranoid and cry at things! lol. Rest if you can, take time to chill out, if you feel yourself boiling up count to ten in your head, tell yourself to calm down and explain to those around you if your close enough the reason why you might be more tetchy then normal. make a joke out of it, say "sorry its the time of the month again, PMT taking over my mind" and so on.. . However some women get really really bad effects and if you do think you are one of those women then i would advise you to seek advice of your GP as you can often get medication to control these effects or some kind of natural remedies. Your gp will know more. hope this helps. Don't despair, just try to chill and relax.

I always find the best thing for PMT is to have a nice soak in the bath, then have a blanket day with a good film and the biggest bar of chocolate you can find. I know it sounds weird, but having a good cry always makes me feel better too

you should try changing your diet, nearer this time of your cycle about 3-4 days in advance eat plenty of stimulation foods that are high in fatty acids and aminos. chocolate is good but it can also act as a depressant. You could try taking st johns wort for at least a month and it should make some difference. altenativly take up a new hobby to take your mind off it.

Get hold of a copy of 'Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition' by Marilyn Shannon. It is full of advice on identifying what kind of PMT you have and how best to deal with it.

I take a multi-vitamin as well as B Complex.

One of the things in B Complex is a vitamin called B6 and that is supposed to be very good at helping to deal with mood swings. One can also buy a separate bottle when it comes to the B6.

My multi-vitamin is a prenatal vitamin (yep, the ones that pregnant women take) and I have never been pregnant. I buy mine over the counter at the local Wal-Mart, and I checked with my dr to make sure it was safe to take and she told me it was. Even the pharmacist at the Wal-Mart told me that this was the best vitamin for a woman to take.

If you are interested in trying the prenatal vitamin check with your dr to see if it's safe for you to take.
