you can get kits to cut out then fill them with that soft cotten stuffing and make some cute little gifts for the baby...i have seen my mom before she died make baby blankets and toys for her great grandchildren...you may need to go to a craft store and see what kind of things they have you can do...or where there is material and patterns.............

Be very careful when you make anything for your baby. Make sure there are no lose strings, buttons, etc. for them to choke on or become tangled in.
Some really hot items right now are called Tag Toys. You can make a small box out of 6 squares of fabrics, but sew on little ribbon tags all over at the seams. Babies love them. Check out your local library for books with patterns. I found a book that showed me how to make the tag toys, a mobile, a stuffed bunny, etc. Or sometimes Walmart will have free patterns for different crafts, or check their pattern books. It's so much easier when working from a pattern.
I love making things for my kids, and I hope someday they will be heirlooms for my grandkids.
