People being people are social animals and like to identify with a group... sometimes at a national level sometimes at a community level sometimes on the basis of a preferred sporting team. Whatever the case these things not only bring people together.. but devide them as well. We have that survival instinct, we all want to see the other team loose even if our best friend is one of their supporters and we know they will be unhappy, we always put ourselves first and that includes the group tha twe identify with and at the same time, to ensure that our group remains at the top of the tree we attempt to get rid of/put down rival groups. Consequently people are more or less wired to descrimate examples that I can think of are the barbi... men go and hang out together and women do like wise, at a social event people who know each other through their work stick together ) they find a more preferred group such as family.
So just as people classify animals into breeds and even those preeds into colour types, people classify themselves on the basis of nationality and beyond that by the next most obvious thing... race/colour. Having classified themselves as being part of a particular group those people then even if unintentionally... start to promote the interests of their group and demean/handicap all other groups..

I think its horrible and and make sure that I consider myself part of the human race- but even here at the Uni where we are all one big "family" it irks me and triggers some resentment when the asian students (who do have good english) ALWAYS get around talking in Chinese or whatever. Perhaps thats comforting for them but it does seem to set them apart from the rest and make me feel alientated and not welcome in their group.
I dont think we will ever get rid of opur natural instincts to differentiate ourselves and therfore never get rid of the race issue.
