Harry and Voldemort are pretty typical to compare... I think you should find characters that have less to do with each other, that would be more interesting. Try Hagrid and Dumbledore! They both have a really nice personality, but Dumbledore is much smarter, it is more difficult to trap him (remember what Tom Riddle did to Hagrid).
You could also compare Hermione and Draco Malfoy - which is a weird comparison but if you think about it, they both work really hard to achieve things (well that can be seen better in the books that came later), but their personality is just really different (Draco stands on the "bad" side while Hermione on the good one). Also Draco is pure blood, Hermione is muggle-born, but she is still more talented. That leads to lot of conflicts. You can also look at their relationship. That reveals a lot of their character.

While Harry Potter and Tom Riddle (Not Voldemort!) are the best choices, I'd also suggest Arthur Weasley and Lucious Malfoy, as fathers of Hogwarts students and how they raise their children. The differences would be financial.

When you are done with that, compare Fred and George!

Personally I think its interesting to compare Harry and Voldomort. Remember the sorting hat almost put Harry in Slytherin in the first book. That shows you how close Harry is to Voldomort. Harry speaks parsle tongue. explore some of these similarities. then contrast the differences like Harry's fairness and quest for whats right.

Why not compare Snape & McGonagall or McGonagall & Lockhart? With Snape & McGonagall you have two powerfull teachers with many differences & attitudes. It would be intresting to really look into. With McGonagall & Lockhart you have different ends of the spectrum to look at and the only thing they may have in common is the "teaching". Look outside the box.

You could compare Fawkes and the Basilisk. Phoenixes signify birth and rebirth whereas the basilisk obviously signifies death. A similarity could be that each one is a "pet" of two opposing forces.
