Some of our behavioral tendencies are inherited and alcoholism is no different. However, one can inherit the tendency and still not become an alcoholic due to environment, and therefore alcoholism is not strictly controlled by genetics, merely influenced by genetics.

There is a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. For example, I have a history of alcoholism on both sides of my family. None of my siblings or I have become alcoholics because we make the cognitive decision to only drink in moderation. Just because we have a history of alcoholism does not mean we will become alcoholics. It just means there is a greater chance we will, than those that do not have a family history.

I would say Yes, it's not a person's fault if they can't handle alcohol, I can't, I wish I could, I'm smart enough to avoid alcohol at all costs.
