I have the money (almost) to buy a beach house almost anywhere in the world. I have been thinking of New Zealand because it is still unspoiled and gorgeous and there is skiing too, but a friend told me Bali is great (I haven't been there). I want somewhere with a mix of action if I want it, but quiet enough to have a community feel. Serious suggestions please.

Depends how you'll be using it. Are you planing on retiring and moving to it? Would it be like taking a 2 / 3 months a year vacation? Would it be mainly to lend it to friends and clients for show?

We have never wanted one because you're kind of stuck to it. A lot of bills to pay and maintenance to do, but you actually won't enjoy it all that much (unless you can work out of it or are retired). I have heard several people saying that there "beach houses" or "boats" gave them two moments of happiness: when they bought it and when they sold it.

IMO, the best thing to do is to go to a resort or rent a place when you feel like it and save/invest your money. You'll get to pick a different place every time and have no hassles.

Finally, if you are still set in buying one, make sure it's a place you'll be able to go often, preferably some place no more than 4 hours away so you can actually use it during weekends. To have one and use it once a year is just dumb.

I would recommend that you seriously consider Lake Tahoe, which is in the United States, and straddles the California and Nevada border.

The water is crystal clear, even when you take a boat out 200 feet in, you can still see the bottom. There is also skiing every winter. As far as action goes, well, Reno isn't that far away, and there are plenty of night clubs on the Nevada side that are worth going to.

There's even a casino that is right on the border between California and Nevada (called Cal-Neva) that was formally owned by Frank Sinatra. There's a yellow line running straight through the entire casino, showing exactly where the border is. Since gambling is only legal in Nevada, all the slot machines and the like is on the Nevada side. It's a very cool place, and even if you don't decide to purchase a place there, you should at least visit.

PS: The best properties are on the side of the lake called "Crystal Bay".

With its white sandy beaches, traveling hills and picturesque harbour, it's no surprise that Rio de Janeiro is known as the "cidade maravilhosa", or marvellous town and with hotelbye you can get the opportunity and visit this excellent city. Rio de Janeiro is experiencing the South Atlantic coast and could be the second-largest city in Brazil. This city is fortunate with one of the very wonderful normal controls for a metropolis in the world. The stunning landscape is just one of the reasons that guests chose Rio de Janeiro. Throughout carnival time, a festival that every one noticed, the roads fill with music and ornately costumed dancers getting tourists from all over the globe.

Try the San Juan Islands in the state of Washington. There is skiing nearby at Mount Baker and access is limited to ferry, boat or plane.

It is also gorgeous and mostly unspoiled. It's location and physical characteristics should meet all of your expectations.
