if you have 45 feet, there will be an extra 1 foot if you put 2 feet onto each chicken

Rabbits have four feet and chicken two feet. Hence a pair made up of one rabbit and one chick would account for 6 feet between them. As there are 90 feet in all, there would be 15 such pairs (90 divided 6). Hence there are 15 rabbits and 15 chicken.
