He just didnt get it. Can anyone else see the difference?

You are right. There is a difference. "Alone by choice" means that you just need some time to get away mentally. Rejuvenate your mind and spirit. Seek out your true self. whereas being lonely is sometimes not by choice. There is an empty feeling and that it longing to be filled. A need to give and receive love, feeling of isolation etc.

the difference between the two cases can only be understood by those who've gone through them.

well . . .according to me you don't have to try to explain this difference to anyone coz it's useless no one will understand.
