Australia is known as the driest continent on Earth, and is currently experiencing the worst drought in one hundred years.
in the large cities, more by good luck than good management, the effect of the drought has not been severe, although water restrictions are now in place. the dam which supplies Sydney is at 32% capacity, resulting in higher water prices for industry and restrictions on domestic use.
some small cities have little or no water, requiring them to truck in supplies.
Australia has for a long time suffered from an unco-ordinated approach to water conservation, and a woeful lack of water harvesting. during the recent summer storms, 95% of the rain that fell on urban Sydney went straight down the stormwater drains and out to sea.
it could be fairly argued that the biggest problem is that each State in Australia claims responsibility for it's own water management, when a national approach would serve the country better. however, that doesn't touch on the real problem
which is that there isn't enough rain to provide the water needed for agriculture, industry, and private use.
sorry....it's not much, and it's all from my head.

It helps them live (you need water to survive), bathe, wash clothes, irrigation to grow food, and the beach for entertainment.

The Great Coral Reef (in the ocean) is a huge tourist attraction. That generates jobs.
